A sleep study, or PSG (polysomnography) is a medical test done while you're asleep. A Registered Polysomnography Technician will monitor and record data about your sleep patterns:
The technician will register shifts between sleep stages, and may identify sleep disorders such as:
The risks of untreated sleep disorders include:
Contact your medical provider, and tell them you'd like to obtain a sleep study. They'll fill out a medical order. Our form may be downloaded here.
After we receive your referral order and medical history, we'll contact you to collect all necessary information and verify your insurance.
You select one of our four locations. All are available seven days a week, so you can pick the night most convenient to you. Studies typically begin at 9pm.
An overnight at one of our labs is like a stay in a hotel, with a private room and bath—so bring anything you would normally need, including pajamas or a night-shirt. Refrain from smoking, consuming caffeine or alcohol, and avoid taking sedatives (unless otherwise prescribed)—all these can skew the results.
Your Technician will great you at the lab, go over all the details and begin your setup. This involves attaching wires (with paste or medical tape) to your scalp, face, legs, and an oxygen monitor to one finger.
Many people think it'll be impossible to fall asleep with all those wires! But it's easier than you think. During the night, the tech will monitor your sleep stages from a remote control room, but is only an intercom call away should you need anything (like a restroom break)!
Your tech will wake you in the morning. Make use of the private shower, then go home and await your results. Your study will be reviewed and a diagnostic report provided to your referring physician.
